Making Himself at Home

One of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes (from Mere Christianity ):
"Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself."

  1. It is so difficult to let go of one's "self" to allow God to transform us into something we have no idea what it will eventually look like. That is where trusting God comes into view. We have His promise that all things happen for good for the believer. Why do I resist believing that when things don't go the way I intended? Lack of trust? hmmm

  2. Yep. Becoming a mansion fit for the King is a beautiful, but painful, thing. Have to trust Him through the pain of change, believing that the architect and designer of all knows best.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  3. Great quote Barry! It is so true. I have not read much C.S. Lewis, but I would like to. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was read to me as a boy, but that’s it. I am especially interested in reading Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters.
