Another Movie From a C.S. Lewis Novel - "The Great Divorce"

This should be good! I finally got around to reading this book just two months ago. It was a short read, but I could not put it down.
"Veteran producer and Mpower CEO Steve McEveety will lead the production team. Childrens' book author N.D. Wilson ("Leepike Ridge," "100 Cupboards") is attached to write.

Lewis, who wrote the "Chronicles of Narnia" books and often wove Christian themes into his works, published "The Great Divorce" in 1945. Story centers on a man who learns that the sprawling, dim metropolis where he's been living is actually Hell; he hops on a bus headed for the outskirts of Elsewhere, only to discover that the one place worse than Hell, for a self-absorbed ad executive, just might be Heaven.

Mpower was created by McEveety in 2007 after he'd been a longtime exec at Mel Gibson's Icon Prods. He produced "The Passion of the Christ" and "We Were Soldiers" and exec produced "Braveheart" and "What Women Want.""

STAR TREK Rocks!

Okay, I forgive them. I forgive the continuity changes. I forgive the character changes. I even forgive the ship design changes.

Star Trek Babies?

Fellow Star Trek fan and conservative writer and speaker Jonah Goldberg at The Corner on National Review Online apparently isn't burning with anticipation for the new Start Trek film. He quotes other fans who have seen the theater trailer and call it "Star Trek Babies", "'Lost' in Space," "Felicity: Star Fleet Academy," and "Star Trek 90210."

Further comments from Jonah's e-mail in box at Trek's Sucktacularity or Lack Thereof.

Oh well, guess we'll find out who's right next May.

Weekend Sci-Fi Fun Stuff: 20 Greatest Sci-Fi TV Shows

Entertainment Weekly has published a list of the 20 Greatest Sci-Fi TV Shows.

20. BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY (1979-1981)
19. THE SIX-MILLION DOLLAR MAN (1974-1978)
18. THE JETSONS (1962-1963)
17. MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 (1989-1999)
16. ALIEN NATION (1989-1990)
15. THE PRISONER (1967)
14. OUTER LIMITS (1963-1965)
13. BABYLON 5 (1993-1998)
12. V: THE MINISERIES (1983-1984)
11. HEROES (2006-)
10. MAX HEADROOM (1987-1988)
9. DOCTOR WHO (1963-)
8. QUANTUM LEAP (1989-1993)
7. FIREFLY (2002)
6. LOST (2004-)
5. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1987-1994
4. THE X-FILES (1993-2002)
3. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003-)
2. STAR TREK (1966-1969)
1. TWILIGHT ZONE (1959-1964)

I agree with most of this list, except I would rank Star Trek #1, Babylon Five #2, and replace The Prisoner with The Time Tunnel. In my opinion Babylon Five is the greatest sci-fi TV show ever, but Star Trek had more industry and cultural influence.

What do you think!

My son and I really enjoy watching the show "Mythbusters" on the Discovery Channel - especially when they blow stuff up. Here's a link to the results of each episode- find out what myths were confirmed and which were busted. Here's a link to Episode 100 - The MacGuyver Special. Cool!

So You Want To Be A Superhero

I saw the new Iron Man movie Saturday night - Fantastic! A really good movie.

C. Michael Patton at Renewing the Mind has decided that, if his theological career and ministry doesn't work out, he wants to be Iron Man. Read the fun stuff at: For those of you who like superheros Parchment and Pen
The layout of the movie is genius. There is nothing overdone, and the story is laid out perfectly, helping you to understand everything you need to know about Tony Stark and why and how he becomes Iron Man. This movie has enough of the chills/this-is-so-cool-I-think-I-am-going-to-cry-factor that you will say, “And why didn’t I know about Iron Man?”

This movie was almost too believable. I really think if this pastor/theologian thing does not work out I will become Iron Man. Seriously.
Here's how Christianity Today's reviewer described the movie:
What makes Iron Man so special? Much like Batman, he doesn't really have any mutant superpowers or radioactive accidents to speak of. Tony Stark is a middle-aged, self-made hero with nothing more than his brilliant mind and seemingly endless wealth to combat evil. Part Howard Hughes, part James Bond, his stories offer complex themes of psychological scars and atonement as Stark wrestles with character flaws and personal demons to become a better man. And as a billionaire weapons industrialist, the Iron Man series offers a timely subject concerning capitalism and the ethical use of weapons to keep the peace.

Ah, who am I kidding? It's the armor.
The producers of this movie have not paid me for this review (snicker). For you comic book geeks, be sure and stay through the credits; there is a small surprise (and maybe a preview for the next movie) after the credits are over.

Red Shirt Expendability

Joe Carter confirms what every Star Trek fan knows- It was dangerous to be a Red Shirt on Kirk's Enterprise! Well, D'oh!

5. As fans of Star Trek will tell you, anyone wearing a red shirt and beaming down to a planet with Captain Kirk is probably going to die. But Matt Bailey has actually done some in-depth analysis of the "Red Shirt Phenomenon":

* Yellow-shirt crewperson deaths: 6 (10%)
* Blue-Shirt crewperson deaths: 5 (8 %)
* Engineering smock crewperson deaths: 4
* Red-Shirt crewperson deaths: 43 (73%)

So, the basic segmentation of factors allows us to confirm that red-shirted crewmembers died more than any other crewmembers on the original Star Trek series.

(HT: Danger Room)
More comments at The Corner:

Fear the Red Shirt [Mark Krikorian]

Even Kathryn must know that crewman wearing the red shirt dies on Star Trek. But now there's detailed data analysis of the phenomenon, complete with a PowerPoint presentation featuring tables and graphs, showing that, indeed, 73 percent of crew deaths in Classic Trek were red-shirts. But there is hope for them

Besides not beaming down, another factor that showed to increase the survival rate of the red-shirts was the nature of the relationship between the alien life and captain Kirk. When Captain Kirk meets an alien woman and "makes contact" the survival rate of the red-shirted crewmen increases by 84%. In fact, out of Captain Kirks' 24 "relationships" there were only three instances of red-shirt vaporization.

"Blue Like Jazz" Movie?

Christianity Today reports that Steve Taylor is working on a movie version of Donald Miller's Blue like Jazz. Interesting book - but how do you convert a series of autobiographical essays and thought experiments into a movie script? Hope it works!
